Pantone vs RAL
One is an ink standard for printing, the other a paint standard for coated metal and plastic. They were never designed to map onto each other — here's how to bridge them without a nasty surprise on site.
TL;DR
Pantone specifies printing inks; RAL specifies paints and powder coatings. There is no official conversion between them because they cover different materials, different finishes, and different gamuts. Any Pantone-to-RAL match is a perceptual approximation — useful for narrowing candidates, never sufficient for sign-off without a physical sample on the real substrate.
One-sentence answer: Pantone standardises printing inks and RAL standardises paints and powder coatings, so there is no official conversion between them — only perceptual approximations that need physical confirmation before anyone signs off.
What RAL actually is
RAL began in Germany in 1927 as a standardisation body — the Reichsausschuss für Lieferbedingungen, or state committee for delivery terms. Its original job was to stop suppliers and buyers arguing about what “grey” meant on a government contract. It did that by publishing a small, fixed set of colors with numbers attached, and the idea stuck.
Today RAL is the default color language of anything painted, coated, or extruded across most of Europe: window frames, machinery, shipping containers, radiators, road signage, architectural metalwork, powder- coated furniture, and plastics. If a fabricator quotes you a color, it will almost certainly be a RAL number.
The system splits into several collections that people routinely confuse:
- RAL Classic — the original industrial range of roughly 216 colors, four-digit codes like
RAL 5010. This is what most people mean by “a RAL colour” and it is what our converter targets. - RAL Design — about 1,825 colors built on the CIELab model, using seven-digit codes that encode hue, lightness, and chroma. Built for architects and interior designers who need fine gradations. It does not overlap with Classic.
- RAL Effect — around 420 solid colors plus 70 metallics, written with a hyphen (for example
RAL 340-4) and based on waterborne paint formulations.
How the systems differ
The mismatch is not a detail of numbering. The two standards answer different questions.
- Material: a Pantone number is a recipe for mixing printing ink. A RAL number is a target appearance for a paint or coating film. One is deposited in microns onto paper; the other is sprayed or cured onto metal, wood, or plastic.
- Finish: Pantone handles finish by publishing the same ink on different papers (Coated, Uncoated, Matte). RAL handles it as a separate axis entirely — the same RAL number is routinely supplied in gloss, semi-gloss, matte, and textured versions that look noticeably different from each other.
- Gamut shape: printing inks reach saturations that industrial coatings generally do not, while coatings reach muted architectural tones and metallics that ink cannot. Neither system is a subset of the other.
- Granularity: Pantone’s solid range runs to well over a thousand references. RAL Classic has roughly 216. Mapping a fine system onto a coarse one guarantees compromise in some regions.
- Ownership: Pantone LLC and RAL gGmbH are unrelated commercial bodies. Neither certifies a translation to the other, and neither is obliged to keep its range aligned with the other’s.
Reading a RAL code
RAL Classic codes look arbitrary but are not. The first digit is a hue family and the remaining three digits are sequential within that family, assigned roughly in the order colors were added rather than by any perceptual logic:
- 1xxx — yellows
- 2xxx — oranges
- 3xxx — reds
- 4xxx — violets
- 5xxx — blues
- 6xxx — greens
- 7xxx — greys
- 8xxx — browns
- 9xxx — whites and blacks
This matters in practice: RAL 5010 is a blue and RAL 9010 is a white, and the shared “010” means nothing at all. Two adjacent numbers within a family are not necessarily adjacent colors either, so you cannot nudge a shade by incrementing the code the way you can walk a Pantone number.
RAL Design codes carry more information. A seven-digit code such as RAL 270 30 20 encodes hue, lightness, and chroma in that order, drawn straight from CIELab. That structure makes RAL Design far easier to interpolate mathematically — which is exactly why it is the collection architects reach for when they want a controlled ramp of related tones.
Why there is no official map
People reasonably expect a lookup table to exist. It does not, and the reason is worth understanding rather than working around.
A conversion between color systems is only meaningful when both describe the same physical situation. Pantone-to-CMYK conversion works as well as it does because both sides are ink on paper under a defined viewing condition — the question is just how to rebuild one ink from four. Pantone-to-RAL has no such shared ground. You are asking what a printing ink on paper would be if it were a cured coating on steel, and that question has no single correct answer because the two surfaces interact with light differently before pigment is even considered.
What a converter can honestly do is compute both colors in a perceptually uniform space and report which RAL reference sits closest, with the distance stated openly. That is genuinely useful — it turns 216 candidates into three or four worth ordering samples of. It is not an equivalence, and any chart that presents it as one is overselling.
Where RAL Classic has gaps
RAL Classic was assembled from industrial demand, not from an attempt to cover color space evenly. The consequences show up predictably:
- Bright, saturated colors are thin on the ground. Vivid yellows, reds, blues, and greens have far fewer options than the muted equivalents.
- Purples are sparse and pinks are close to absent. A magenta or hot-pink brand color will not find a satisfying RAL Classic partner. This is the single most common source of disappointment for consumer brands moving into physical product.
- Greys and browns are richly represented — a legacy of the system’s industrial and architectural origins.
If your brand color lands in a sparse region, no converter will rescue it. The realistic options are a custom-matched coating, a move to RAL Design where the spacing is finer, or a documented decision to accept the nearest available RAL as the physical-product variant of the brand color.
Converting in practice
A workflow that survives contact with a real fabricator:
- Start from the most authoritative value you have. A measured Lab reading from a physical guide beats a screen HEX every time. If all you have is a HEX from a brand PDF, say so in the specification rather than pretending to a precision you do not have.
- Generate a shortlist, not an answer. Take the top three or four candidates from the converter rather than the single closest, because the second-best numerical match is often the better physical match once finish is considered.
- Order physical samples. Coaters and suppliers will send RAL chips or sprayed coupons. This step is cheap and it is the only one that actually settles the question.
- Compare under controlled light. Standardised D50 or D65 viewing, not office LEDs or a window. Two colors that match under one illuminant and diverge under another — metamerism — is a routine failure mode when comparing ink to coating.
- Check on the real substrate and finish. A gloss coupon and a matte coupon of the same RAL number will not read the same. Confirm against the finish you are actually buying.
- Record the decision. Write the approved RAL number, the finish, the substrate, and the date into the brand guidelines so the next project does not repeat the exercise.
Vendor handoff language
Ambiguous specifications are where color projects go wrong. Be explicit about what is fixed and what the vendor may decide:
Enclosure to be powder coated RAL 5010, semi-gloss (approximately 50 gloss units at 60°). This RAL reference was selected as the nearest available match to brand blue Pantone 288 C; the RAL number is the binding specification, not the Pantone reference. Supply a sprayed coupon on production substrate for approval before batch production.
The critical sentence is the one naming which reference governs. When a specification lists both a Pantone and a RAL number without saying which wins, different suppliers resolve the conflict differently and you get colour drift across a product line.
Approval checklist
- Confirm which collection the code belongs to — Classic, Design, or Effect.
- State the gloss level separately; the RAL number does not carry it.
- Approve against a sprayed coupon on the production substrate, not a printed chart.
- View under standardised lighting and check a second illuminant for metamerism.
- Name the governing reference in writing when both Pantone and RAL appear.
- Re-approve when the substrate, supplier, or finish changes.
